Finally back in person!

About 65 participants from 10 countries came together for the NanoCarbon Annual Conference 2022 in Würzburg

In addition to the most important applications for nanocarbon materials, such as energy storage devices and enhanced composite materials, this year’s NanoCarbon Annual Conference also emphasised socially highly relevant topics like more sustainable production methods or regulation of nanomaterials.

During the NanoCarbon Annual Conference, which took place for the seventh time this year on June 21 and 22, international experts discussed the top developments in the field of nanocarbons. Between 2015 and 2020, this event had been organised by the Cluster Nanotechnology and the Network NanoCarbon annually in Würzburg at the end of February, however due to the pandemic the conference could not take place in person during the last two years and had to be postponed or taken online.

The NanoCarbon Annual Conference offers the international nanocarbon community an ideal opportunity for exchanging their expertise in the field of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphenes. The main goal of the conference is to support intensive networking between innovative SMEs and research institutes. This year, this networking aspect was especially important to our guests. Very constructive discussions were started during the Q&A sessions of the lecture program and during the poster sessions. Also, the participants enjoyed getting together during the coffee breaks and especially for the evening event, the conference dinner on the river Main. Many guests considered this midsummer boat trip a highlight of the event and gave excellent feedback on the organisation of the conference.

Furthermore, the high-profile presentation program was appreciated by the participants. Many members of the specialist audience commented on the remarkably high quality of our international speakers. Some highlights of the program were talks by experts from Skeleton Technologies, Nanocyl SA, École de Technologie Supérieure de Montréal, ZEON Corporation, Nagoya University and many well-established members of the Network NanoCarbon. Focus topics of the two-day event were new uses for nanocarbons in the fields of energy storage and conversion, nanocomposites and applications, as well as safety and sustainability. Also, we have brought back the concept of short pitches in addition to plenary sessions. In a short pitch, the presenters only have exactly 5 minutes of time to gain the interest of the audience with their ideas, projects, services or products - while the clock is ticking. These incentive presentations marked the beginning of especially lively discussions that were often continued in the poster exhibition or during the coffee break.

This year, the event took place at LGA (Landesgewerbeanstalt) Würzburg. The accompanying exhibition in the foyer and outdoor area of the venue demonstrated nanocarbon materials, analytic devices and another highlight of the event: the NAWARacer, the world-first hybrid battery-powered e-motorbike by NAWA Technologies - energy storage experts and members of the Network NanoCarbon.

The NanoCarbon Annual Conference was completed by the traditional poster exhibition, where researchers put their results up for discussion. This year, the poster award went to the Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e. V. (first place) and École de Technologie Supérieure de Montréal (second place).

We value the outstanding feedback from our participants, and aim to continue the successful story of our event next year. Save the date for the next NanoCarbon Annual Conference on March 14-15, 2023.

The Network NanoCarbon which is managed by the Cluster Nanotechnology is an open network for the development of marketable nanocarbon products. The network partners are experts in the field of production, processing, application and disposal of these materials, i.e. for the entire life cycle of these products. In the focus of the network activities are small and medium-sized enterprises aiming to accelerate the technology transfer.
