Fraunhofer Institute for Microengineering and Microsystems IMM Webinar: “Small in size, big in importance: What are the advantages of continuous synthesis of nanomaterials and inline/online process analytics?”

Reproducibility [of what?] is one of the most important goals in nanoparticle synthesis. The particle properties and hence the product quality often directly result from the particle size and particle size distribution. In batchwise syntheses, difficulty in reproducibility is a common problem which can be adequately addressed by our technology and where our technology can make a difference for your further development. Moreover, continuous processes offer a number of advantages that are not achievable with conventional batch methods.

The product quality results from the process and can hence be tuned by the process parameters. As long as we have a stable process, a constant product quality is obtained. Production-wise, a continuous process therefore always preferable, as the desired quantity can be produced just by letting the process run long. Thanks to the life-long experience at Fraunhofer IMM and solid understanding of flow and mixing processes, the hardware components can finally be selected and/or be tailor-made to match the demands in regard to the process, throughput and product quality.

In the presentation, we cover these topics with a number or illustrative examples, i.e. the wet-chemical, high-temperature synthesis of colloidal quantum dots, where inline/online analytics by means of real-time optical spectroscopy plays a central role. Using this combination of continuous process and analytics, the synthesis can be tuned with outstanding control over the fluorescence wavelength, down to sub-nanometer precision.

To sum up, we present you a few complementary examples of our recent activities in this field, covering green synthesis of quantum dots and a recent system to study the dynamic dissolution of nano- or microscale materials, which is an important question in regard to hazard evaluation and the environmental fate of such materials.
