Review: A practical seminar on how to characterize an ink in its complete life cycle

|   Cluster News

Along its life cycle, an ink must fulfil a full range of end-use properties and standards to guarantee high performances. In the two-day seminar “life of an Ink” (full of input and opportunities for exchanging and networking) the nanoInk partners KRÜSS and FORMULACTION now combined their analytical competences to provide a comprehensive view of the formulation and characterization of inks. The seminar therefor provided a full and almost complete characterization journey of the product life cycle of a commercial ink formulation.

Along its life cycle, an ink must fulfil a full range of end-use properties and standards to guarantee high performances. From the initial raw material to the final ink formulation, this involves parameters like dispersibility, wettability, initial particle size, zeta potential, and sedimentation rate. During the application process further characteristics like surface tension properties of the formulation, wettability of the substrate and finally drying kinetics of the ink itself must be considered.

In the two-day seminar “life of an Ink” (full of input and opportunities for exchanging and networking) the nanoInk partners KRÜSS and FORMULACTION now combined their analytical competences to provide a comprehensive view of the formulation and characterization of inks.

The seminar provided a full and almost complete characterization journey of the product life cycle of a commercial ink formulation, combining the measurement techniques of both partners. On top of this, participants had the chance to actively put hands-on the different instruments in the lab session.

The experts Dr Andrew Mellor (Application Market Manager, KRÜSS), Matthias Lesti (CEO, german subsidiary for Formulaction), Dr Daniel Hagmeyer (Product Manager, Microtrac Retsch), and Dr Justus Hermannsdörfer (Manager of the network nanoInk) provided deep knowledge and practical insights about the different technical aspects.

A follow up event is planned for 2024, probably in Paris, France.
